GRADE 1 SOCIAL STUDIES TERM 1 || ZAMBIAN SCHEME OF WORK

The GRADE 1 SOCIAL STUDIES TERM 1 introduces young learners to foundational topics that help them understand their FAMILY, COMMUNITY, and ENVIRONMENT. The lessons are designed to foster curiosity, develop a sense of belonging, and build social and moral values. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, students are encouraged to explore their immediate surroundings and culture.

1. MYSELF AND MY FAMILY

The term starts with lessons about MYSELF and FAMILY MEMBERS. Students learn to identify themselves, their family structures, and roles within the family. Topics include basic personal information (name, age, and address) and family relationships (e.g., mother, father, siblings). Activities such as drawing family trees and sharing stories about family life make the lessons relatable and interactive.

2. MY HOME AND COMMUNITY

Learners explore their HOME ENVIRONMENT and its connection to the COMMUNITY. They learn about the importance of working together, sharing, and respecting neighbors. Key lessons include identifying places like homes, markets, clinics, and schools within the community. Practical activities such as creating simple maps and discussing community helpers (e.g., farmers, shopkeepers) make the lessons engaging.

3. GOOD BEHAVIOR AND RULES

Students are taught the importance of GOOD BEHAVIOR in the family, school, and community. Topics include showing respect to elders, helping others, and following rules. Through role-playing and group discussions, learners explore how good behavior contributes to harmony and peace in their surroundings.

4. ZAMBIAN TRADITIONS AND FESTIVALS

Students are introduced to ZAMBIAN TRADITIONS and FESTIVALS, helping them appreciate their cultural heritage. They learn about traditional dances, songs, and ceremonies celebrated within their communities. Storytelling and singing traditional songs are used to highlight the importance of preserving cultural practices.

5. MY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

Learners are familiarized with their SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, including important places such as the classroom, playground, and the HEADTEACHER’S OFFICE. They also learn about the roles of teachers and classmates. Activities like drawing their school layout and discussing classroom rules teach them responsibility and teamwork.

6. CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The concept of environmental care is introduced with lessons on keeping the surroundings clean and protecting nature. Students learn the difference between LIVING and NON-LIVING THINGS, as well as the importance of planting trees and disposing of waste properly. Activities such as picking up litter and identifying plants and animals nearby make the lessons practical and fun.

7. NATIONAL SYMBOLS

Towards the end of the term, students are introduced to key ZAMBIAN SYMBOLS such as the national flag and national anthem. They learn the meaning of each symbol and their significance in promoting unity and patriotism. Singing the national anthem and coloring the Zambian flag are used to reinforce learning.

The GRADE 1 SOCIAL STUDIES TERM 1 is designed to nurture young learners’ understanding of their roles in their family, school, and community. It provides a strong foundation for future learning while promoting cultural pride, social responsibility, and environmental awareness.
