Grade 2 CTS Term 2 Scheme of Work || ZAMBIAN SCHEME OF WORK

The GRADE 2 SCHEME OF WORK is a thoughtfully designed educational framework tailored to meet the needs of young learners in ZAMBIA. It builds on the foundational skills gained in GRADE 1 while introducing new concepts to nurture creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. This scheme ensures a balanced approach to learning, integrating key subjects essential for academic growth and character development.

    1. ENGLISH LANGUAGE

In GRADE 2, ENGLISH lessons aim to refine READING, WRITING, LISTENING, and SPEAKING skills. The curriculum includes topics such as advanced PHONICS, SENTENCE FORMATION, and the use of basic GRAMMAR, including NOUNS, VERBS, and ADJECTIVES. Students practice READING COMPREHENSION with short stories and passages, enhancing their ability to interpret text and expand vocabulary. CREATIVE WRITING is introduced through activities like crafting simple stories and sentences. ORAL PRESENTATIONS, SPELLING GAMES, and ROLE-PLAYING activities make learning interactive and fun, building confidence in communication.

    2. MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS in GRADE 2 introduces learners to more advanced numerical concepts while strengthening their grasp of basic arithmetic. The curriculum covers ADDITION and SUBTRACTION of two-digit numbers, simple MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION, and an introduction to FRACTIONS and GEOMETRY. Students explore SHAPES, PATTERNS, and MEASUREMENT through hands-on activities using objects like rulers and counters. PROBLEM-SOLVING exercises are designed to develop logical reasoning and analytical skills. Group activities, puzzles, and real-life applications of MATH concepts ensure learners engage with the subject in meaningful ways.

    3. SCIENCE

The SCIENCE curriculum encourages students to explore and understand the world around them. Topics include the classification of LIVING and NON-LIVING THINGS, FOOD GROUPS and HEALTHY EATING, PERSONAL HYGIENE, and WEATHER CHANGES. Students engage in observation-based learning, experiments, and fieldwork to build critical thinking skills. For instance, they might explore the LIFE CYCLE of a plant by growing seeds or observe the WEATHER to understand patterns. These activities foster curiosity and a hands-on approach to SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY.

    4. SOCIAL STUDIES

SOCIAL STUDIES lessons broaden students’ understanding of their COMMUNITY, CULTURE, and COUNTRY. Topics include FAMILY ROLES, traditional CEREMONIES, ZAMBIAN LANDMARKS, and basic MAP READING skills. Students learn about the importance of COOPERATION, respect for others, and their responsibilities as young citizens. Discussions on CULTURAL DIVERSITY and historical figures encourage learners to appreciate ZAMBIA’S HERITAGE. Interactive activities, such as drawing maps and reenacting traditional practices, make lessons engaging and memorable.

    5. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION instills moral values, emphasizing lessons of LOVE, KINDNESS, HONESTY, and RESPECT. The curriculum uses BIBLICAL STORIES to teach concepts such as FORGIVENESS, OBEDIENCE, and COMPASSION. Through storytelling, singing, and discussions, students reflect on how these values apply in their daily lives. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION not only builds character but also promotes harmony and inclusiveness.

The GRADE 2 SCHEME OF WORK is structured to ensure that children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. By integrating theory with practical activities, this curriculum prepares students for the next stage of their education while fostering a lifelong love for learning. Aligned with ZAMBIA’S EDUCATION STANDARDS, it equips learners with the skills and values they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
